Sign Language
Signing - using
hand-gestures to convey meaning - is commonly associated with deaf people.
But others with communication difficulties may benefit from the use of
sign-assisted speech
(signing that accompanies speech). Most sign systems in use in Britain derive
from
British Sign Language (BSL), the standard language of deaf people.
One such is Makaton, a simplified version of BSL developed by a speech and
language
therapist for use with children with learning disability, such as Down's
Syndrome children.
Another system, which has greatly expanded from Makaton, is Signalong.
Sign-assisted speech may benefit people with congenital language disability,
autistic spectrum disorders and acquired brain injury, as well as those with
learning disability.
