In music, musical terms are used to describe the kind of tone or speed that is being used.
Italian is often used for this.

Strength or tone:
Pianissimo (pp)         Very soft
Piano (p)                   Soft
Mezzo Piano (mp)      Moderately soft
Mezzo forte (mf)        Moderately loud
Forte (f)                    Loud
Fortissimo (ff)           Very loud

pp, mp etc. are usually written under the notes to which they refer.
