Just as letters join together to make words, notes join together to make music. 
Notes are written on a special diagram called a staff (or stave). 

Staff

In a staff there are five lines (with four spaces between them).

This began in ancient times as one single line and then had companion lines added to it.
These lines and spaces defined the exact pitch (frequency of sound) of the notes.

Here is an example of a staff with notes written on the lines and spaces.
The names of the notes will be explained in later theory lessons.
