Learning to read written
music is like learning to read a written language.
The sounds of words are written with letters.
The sounds of music are written in notes.
Notes have been
used to write down the sounds of music since ancient times.
Two different systems of letters were used to write down the instrumental
and the vocal music of ancient Greece.
Boethius (A.D. 470 –
A.D. 525), a Roman philosopher, applied the first 15 letters of the
alphabet to the notes in use at the end of the Roman period.
