ACONITE: A first remedy for inflamations and inflamatory fevers.
Often useful in the first stages of high-grade inflamations, fevers and congestions with anxiety, heat and
restlessness. Suits healthy people whose complaints come on suddenly.
Possible causes: cold / dry wind; fright / shock. Dry, hot skin.
Symptoms worse evening / around midnight. Thirsty for cold drinks.
Everything taste bitter, except water. Characterised by extreme
restlessness and fear. May specifically have an unfounded fear of death.
ARNICA: Essential first aid remedy for both bruising and
shock.
For mechanical injuries, heavy blows, car accident (200C
potency immed.), bruising, sprains. Treats battered area of body, soft
tissue below skin, fibrous tissue, periostium (membrane & bones),
muscles. Should be a first choice after most accidents and injuries.
Given early it will reduce swelling and bruising. The patient may claim
to be alright when clearly they are not – a classic response of
someone in shock. Averse to being talked to or even approached. Hot and
red head and face, cold extremities. Persistent tiredness. Helps stop
bleeding in all wounds and injuries, to heal wounds and counteract shock
and emotional trauma. The 200 potency should only be used in the most
severe cases.
As an ointment or cream use externally only on unbroken
wounds.
BELLADONNA: Excellent remedy for children.
For high fevers and sore throats. Patient feels
internally cold, externally burning hot. Flushed face, eyes glassy, the
pupils black are always dilated. Very sensitive to pains which come and
go suddenly. Patient is angry, may be delirious and even have visions.
Thirsty, may crave lemonade and drink it in sips. Worse for sun, touch,
noise or jarring movement.
CALENDULA: Amazing topical healing agent for open
wounds.
Mostly used in short-term situations. Only for abrasions and
shallow wounds — its fast healing powers might trap infection inside
deep wounds.
Use where skin is broken and torn, for cuts, superficial
burns or scalds, pus, ulcers, after tooth extraction. It stimulates
formation of unlumpy, healthy scar tissue.
Use externally in cream, ointment or tincture form. Take
internally if there is much discomfort or suppuration.
EUPHRASIA:
It is primarily an acute remedy for
catarrhal eye problems and mostly used in short-term situations.
Use for catarrhal infections of the mucous membranes,
especially eyes and nose. If the patient has a fever, chill will
predominate. Profuse, watery discharge from the eyes with bland runny
discharge from the nose. Red faced with cold hands. Often perspiration
confined to the upper body. No cough at night.
HYPERICUM: No. 1 remedy for injury to nerves —
Arnica of the nerves.
For injuries to parts rich in nerves. For very painful
cuts with shooting pains as if along nerves. Indicated for injuries to
the head (concussion), spine or coccyx. Crushed finger or toe pain
radiates along path of nerve. If back pain is a shooting pain. Lacerated
wounds from sharp instruments. Excessive painfulness of affected part.
Dentist, before and after drilling, extraction (200C potency).
Haemorrhoids.
It is reputed to have anti-tetanus properties.
Use in pill, ointment or tincture form.
LEDUM: No. 1 remedy for puncture wounds and black
eyes.
Use for puncture wounds, particularly if wounded area is
cold. Also when the wound does not bleed much but becomes puffy and
swollen, such as from a nail, thorn, bite or sting. It affects fibrous
tissues of joints and skin. Like Hypericum it is reputed to have
anti-tetanus properties. The patient will have violent thirsts for cold
water. Although chilly, and body cold to touch, any kind of warmth
aggravates the symptoms.
RHUS
TOX: A frequently used remedy for sprains and
strains.
Use for joints, ligaments, tendons and skin. The patient
will have stiffness, coupled with great restlessness. Pains usually
around joints, which ache, feel sore and bruised. The pain gets worse on
initial movement, but this eases after continued movement, as long as it
is not too strenuous. Patients who need this remedy hate damp, cold
weather. During colds, fevers and ‘flus, a triangular red tip at the
end of their tongue is a distinctive symptom.
RUTA: The first remedy for strains to tissues around
bony parts.
It is particularly used for wrists, knees and ankles,
and is a classic remedy for tennis elbow.
It is for strains to tissues around bony parts often
brought on by overexertion, and for fracture or damage to bones. Ruta’s
action is deeper, but it has a less distinctive picture than Rhus Tox
— it is less restless. The patient feels a general bruised soreness,
aching, with weakness. Useful for eyestrain where eyes feel hot, bruised
and sore after overuse, and vision deteriorates.
SYMPHYTOM: Primarily a first aid remedy.
The source is the plant Symphytom Officinalis, also
known as Comfrey or Knitbone (folk name). It has always been a herbal
remedy for healing wounds and it was thought that, taken as a tonic, it
helped the body to heal itself more rapidly.
It is used particularly for traumatic injuries of the
eye, apply tincture where there is swelling. Also after an accident when
Arnica has been used for the initial trauma, when the broken bone has
been set it can help speed up the knitting process. It is beneficial for
joint pains, e.g. damaged cartilage in the knee. It can be used for the
spine where there has been injury or disintegration of tissue.
